Queen Street work begins
Tuesday, 12th May 2009.
Work has begun on creating an attractive new shopping environment in Queen Street Haverhill. The work, costing £400,000, is the outcome of wide reaching consultation, and will be completed in preparation for the opening of Tesco in the autumn.
Shoppers are being called on to support the local businesses through advertisements in the local press. Although the road will be closed to vehicles for the duration of the work, it remains open to pedestrians and all the shops will be open and trading as usual. Newsletters giving updates on progress will be available through traders, who are being supported through the project by the Town Centre Manager.
Queen Street will provide a vital link between the new superstore and high street shops. The scheme is being carried out by contractors working for St Edmundsbury Borough Council, who will be doing everything possible to minimise disruption.
The work includes new paving and street surfaces, street furniture, lighting and the creation of an informal meeting place with seating and trees.
