Project helps women develop their art skills

Wednesday, 6th April 2011.

A group of Haverhill women have been working with a professional artist on a project to improve their own art skills.

As part of the Freedom Programme, participants from the Wednesdays For Women group at the Leiston Centre in Haverhill have been working with an Argentinian artist living in Haverhill, Christina Howard, to produce spectacular personal pieces of artwork.

The group was set up in response to a lack of provision for mothers living on an estate in Haverhill that is recognized as being deprived and in an area of health inequality with little support for women.

It has recently been battling a funding crisis caused by the closure of the On Track programme by Suffolk County Council, from which it had received help to run its creche.

The Freedom programme is a facilitated course which explores the nature of domestic uncertainties.

The group has been working on canvass using a variety of mediums including textiles, paint, and acrylic using a range of methods to achieve members' desired effects.

The project, called All Rise, which came to an end this morning, was funded through the Western Suffolk Community Safety Partnership and managed by the arts and heritage officer from Forest Heath District Council, Lizzie Cocker.
