Post office gets a reprieve
Thursday, 15th June 2000.
A VILLAGE post office has been saved after complaints from residents and councillors.
Owners of the West Wratting post office and tea rooms had originally applied to demolish the buildings, and erect two replacement residential buildings which would result in the village losing its only postal service.
However, following concerns raised by West Wratting parish council, members and villagers, the planning application was changed to include a provision of a small community post office.
“Since the amendment, the parish council, who initially opposed the scheme, has decided it has no objections to the revised plans,” said planning officer Paul Grainger, at a meeting of South Cambridgesbire District Council’s Planning Committee.
“However, they do expect this council to satisfy itself that this amendment is OK with Post Office Counters Limited, who have indicated that space is not a problem as post offices can even be run out of someone’s front room if they so wish.”
Members of the Planning Committee agreed the application subject to the post office being retained, and to their approval on signage, design and access.
