Policewoman in bridge rescue to get bravery award

Wednesday, 6th January 2010.

A Haverhill policewoman is to receive a bravery award for saving a young woman on Wratting Road bridge in September.

PC Kelly Waggett is to receive the Chief Constable's Commendation for Bravery after her work in releasing and bringing down the young woman, who had climbed over the rail of the bridge.

PC Waggett and another officer held on to the woman who then removed her feet from the railings so they had to support her whole weight.

They held on to her for more than half an hour until the fire service, using a rescue tower, were able to secure her to the railing and then lower her to the ground.

At the time. Haverhill police chief, Insp Andrew Mason, said he was certain they had saved her life.
