Police seek public's help to curb shoplifting increase

Monday, 23rd June 2014.

Haverhill has seen a spate of shoplifting recently and police are asking the public for help in identifying the thieves.

The town's police chief, Insp Peter Ferrie, said they were aware of a set of criminals who seemed to live by shoplifting and were doing their best to catch them.

In particular they have released descriptions of two men who walked out of Peacocks on Sunday afternoon with two T-shirts and a pair of shorts.

The incident happened around 3.30pm. The fist man is described as white British about 6ft tall in his late 20s or early 30s wearing a bright red T-shirt and carrying a blue/green bag for life.

The second man is also white British, in his mid 30s with black medium length hair and wearing shorts and sunglasses.

There have been a series of shoplifting incidents recently and at last week's public forum of the Safer Neighbourhood Team, Insp Ferrie reported that shoplifting was one of the few crimes in Haverhill which has gone up recently.

Around 9.30pm on Saturday someone walked into Tesco, picked up a blue/green sun-lounger and walked out weith it.

A security guard spotted it and chased the thief, who dropped the lounger in the car park and ran off into the Chalkstone estate.

The guard pursued him but lost him, and when he came back, found someone else had stolen the sun-lounger.
