Police operations succeed in Strasbourg Square

Tuesday, 21st December 2010.

Anti-social behaviour in and around Strasbourg Square in Haverhill has been reduced significantly by three police operations in the last few weeks.

The third and last part of Operation StaySafe took place on Friday evening.

Extra officers were deployed targeting anti-social behaviour, along with drugs dogs.

There were two similar operations towards the end of November. This latest one was timed to coincide with the last day of term when there is traditionally an increase in anti-social behaviour.

Haverhill's police chief, Insp Chris Galley, said the work done in Strasbourg Square, one of the Haverhill Safer Neighbourhood Team priorities after complaints from the public, had resulted in a 'dramatic reduction' in offences and nuisance behaviour.

Anti-social behaviour was still continuing sometimes, however, so the priority would be continued as there was more work still to be done, he said.

The additional officers were available thanks to some funding from the West Suffolk Community Safety Partnership, Insp Galley said.

The funding also allowed police to deploy extra officers in the high street to deal with alcohol-related events on the weekend before Christmas.
