Police officer injured in tackling drink-driver
Monday, 2nd April 2012.
Another Haverhill policeman has been injured while trying to arrest someone in the town centre.
PC Rupert Beynon suffered a broken ring finger of his right hand in rugby tackling a drink-driver who was trying to run away. He is likely to be out of action for some time.
The incident happened overnight on Saturday/Sunday in the Queen Street area.
Officers on patrol on foot and in a car heard a vehicle roaring around the Cangle roundabout and into Lower Downs Slade car park.
The police car went round to the car park and a sergeant went to talk to the driver who ran off into an alleyway.
As he did so, PC Beynon, on foot, came up from Queen Street and tackled the man, breaking his finger in the process.
He managed to hold on to the offender with his other hand long enough for the sergeant to arrest him, and the man, aged 20, has been charged with obstructing a police officer and drink-driving.
PC Beynon had recently returned to response duties after several years in the Safer Neighbourhood Team at Haverhill.
Several officers have been injured during incidents in the town in recent months, the most serious being PC Mike Potter, who had his shoulder dislocated while trying to arrest someone six months ago.
He has been back on light duties in recent weeks, and is hoping to return to normal work next week, but the injury to PC Beynon means police in Haverhill will still be a man down.
