Police move into social networking
Friday, 14th May 2010.
Suffolk police are asking members of the online community to join the constabulary's new Facebook page.
The page, called ‘Suffolk Constabulary Official Page, was launched on Monday, April 26, as an additional tool for engaging with the public.
It includes recent stories, information on how to report crime, currentcampaigns, photo albums and upcoming events.
Members can also discuss their opinions about what the police have been doing and air views about local issues via the site’s discussion area.
UK Facebook User Statistics show that the biggest user age group is 20 to 29-year-olds and it is also popular with those aged 13-19. This will allow Suffolk Constabulary to reach a wider audience and people are encouraged to join the page.
In turn, Suffolk Constabulary will use the page to:
· Increase public confidence by engaging with the public through consultation
· Communicate positive stories
· Give advice and general information
· Carry out appeals
Assistant Chief Constable Stewart Gull said: “The Facebook page gives us a new and exciting way to interact with the community. With online social networking becoming ever more popular it is important for Suffolk Constabulary to have a presence on sites like Facebook, as they offer another way for members of the public to communicate with us and us with them.
“We are encouraging everyone to become members of the group and in turn please encourage friends and family in Suffolk to do the same. This is a public page and the more members we can get, the more people we are able to reach.
“We hope everyone supports and enjoys the new Facebook page. Other forces have shown that by keeping the page up to date and interesting we can create a valuable tool in public engagement.”
