Police in plea over car crime
Thursday, 22nd August 2002.
A police chief is urging the public to help his officers tackle a spate of vehicle crime in Haverhill.
Thefts of and from vehicles happened at the rate of one a day during July, with audio equipment, power tools and mobile phones taken.
Inspector Mike Bacon, sector commander for the town, is asking the public to dial 999 if they see crimes occurring and to take steps to avoid becoming victims.
He said: "So many of these crimes can be avoided if people remove valuable items from their cars and make sure audio equipment is property-marked or removed. They should also park under a streetlight if possible or get rid of all the rubbish from the garage so they can put the car in there.
Anyone who sees a crime in progress should ring 999. Anyone else with information should ring Haverhill police on (01284) 774100.
