Police delighted with results of knife amnesty in town
Tuesday, 5th April 2011.
Police in Haverhill say they are 'very pleased' with the result of the knife amnesty held in the town over the last two months
The countywide knife amnesty, Bin A Blade, has completed its two months in Haverhill with 161 knives and sharp objects being handed in.
During February and March one of the county's mobile bins was situated in the foyer of Haverhill police station.
Sgt Sarah Bartley of Haverhill Safer Neighbourhood Team said: "We in Haverhill were happy to support the campaign as a whole and are really pleased with the results here.
"We haven't had a knife amnesty in Haverhill for some years, and we've got more handed in this time than ever before. Being able to come in and put a knife in the bin without having to give your identity was really important.
"It means 161 weapons are now out of circulation and cannot be used for violent crime."
Most of the objects handed in were kitchen knives, but the total did include cleavers, carving forks and penknives.
All the deposited items will be taken to Sackers Recycling in Great Blakenham where they will be stored securely.
