Plea to recycle all your Christmas waste

With every Suffolk resident expected to throw away around 50 kilos of waste this Christmas, the Suffolk Waste Partnership is asking people to remember to recycle rather than giving to landfill.
This is the time of year when we produce the most amount of waste. Every January, Suffolk recycles an extra 600 tonnes of waste (equivalent to an extra 96,000 recycling bins) and sends an extra 1250 tonnes to landfill (equivalent to 79,000 rubbish bins).
There will be hundreds of thousands of cards, electrical items, CDs, DVDs, cartons, glass bottles and textiles waiting to be recycled, not to mention all that leftover packaging and food.
With Christmas jumpers flying off the shelves this year, help is also available to make room in the wardrobe.
In addition to giving unwanted clothes to charity, all Suffolk residents can now bag up their unwanted textiles, tie them securely and pop the bag inside their recycling bin.
If you need more textiles bags, please email textiles@suffolk.gov.uk, call 0845 603 9412 or collect them in person from any council office or library.
Cllr Andrew Nunn, chair of the Suffolk Waste Partnership, said: “We are all so busy having fun at Christmas and can generate a lot more waste. A lot of this extra waste can be saved from landfill which is why it’s important to make full use of your recycling bin.
“We hope people won’t forget to recycle things like textiles too. It’s easy to get hold of our special bags - just email, call us or collect a bag from any council office or library.”
The Household Waste Recycling Centres provide a service for residents over the Christmas period and only close on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. They will be open and ready to take excess Christmas recycling from December 27 to 31.
