Play scheme rescue joy
By Jo Deeks on Thursday, 25th May 2000.
A Haverhill play scheme in danger of being cancelled has been saved at the 11th hour.
the Summer Fun Play Scheme is in its 12th year, but was in danger of folding because no suitable premises could be found.
Now it will go ahead at Castle Hill Middle School, but more volunteers are urgently needed and organisers face a frantic rush to get it organised.
The scheme caters for 99 children a day and has more than 200 youngsters on its books.
Due to space restrictions, there will be no nursery this year, so that four and five-year-olds who have not yet started school cannot be taken. This will mean extra space for five to 13-year -olds.
the scheme will operate from July 24 to August 10, with a party on August 11.
Booking-in Day will be held at the Burton Centre next to Haverhill Library on June 17, from 10am-1pm.
Kaz Hewitt, who chairs the scheme, said they would have had to cancel it if they had not found premises by the end of May.
Mrs Hewitt, a former Haverhill policewoman, with three children, now lives near Stowmanrket and will be travelling every day to help run the scheme. She appealed to anyone with any time to spare to contact organisers as soon as possible.
"Even if people can only do one day, we don't expect them to come for the whole three weeks.
"we cannot take the children unless we have the right number of adults", Mrs Hewitt said.
