Plans for VE Day
Thursday, 23rd February 1995.
A street party 1940s style in Haverhill town centre is one of the ideas put forward for VE day celebrations by new town council leisure worker Nick Keeble.
The council's leisure committee has already decided to integrate its normal May Fun Day at Castle Playing Fields with VE Day celebrations on Monday May 8.
Now Nick and the leisure committee want to hear from anyone in the town with ideas for the celebrations or comments on their suggestions.
Provisional ideas for the day include a street party in Queen Street with an open invitation to the people of the town to come along. People could bring a picnic, or food stalls could be provided manned by people wearing 1940s costumes. There would also be a Kids Fun Day on the Market Hill.
A booklet of VE Day memories and stories may be produced as a memento with help from the Local History Group. Other plans are for a memorabilia exhibition and VE Day-theme quiz night.
Other suggestions put forward include an Old Time Music Hall event at the town hall, an evening of music from the 1940s and an open-air church service.
Haverhill Scouts plan a musical event at the town hall on the evening on May 8, and the operatic society will be staging a 40s Review.
A meeting of interested parties is planned for February 21 and anyone wishing to attend or make comments should contact Nick Keeble on Haverhill 712858.
