Plans For Town Sculpture Go Ahead
Tuesday, 8th July 2003.
PLANS for a sculpture to be put up on the first by-pass roundabout entering Haverhill have been approved, despite a strong objection from Withersfield Parish Council to a laser light being used.
Members of St Edmundsbury Borough Council's Development Control committee approved the application from Haverhill Enterprise 2000 for the 10-metre high stainless steel artwork, with a centrally-sited laser pointing skyward through a diffuser.
A comment from Withersfield Parish Council said that it approved of the artwork structure, but strongly opposed the laser, which would cause a light pollution nuisance, it said.
A report to the Committee said the application had been generally well received apart from the comments from Withersfield, where comparisons were made with lights from a Newmarket nightclub. Council officers pointed out that the nightclub used a searchlight, not a laser.
The laser would produce thin pencil beams of light projected upwards and as there was no spread of light, there would be little light pollution, it was claimed.
The plan had been subjected to an extensive safety audit by the Highway Authority and no objection was raised.
