Planning appeal is lost
Thursday, 7th March 2002.
AN APPEAL against the refusal of planning consent to build a house on land at the edge of Haverhill, close to the by-pass, has been turned down by a planning inspector.
The application by Nick Hopkins for land at Hazel Stub, Burton End Road, was the subject of an appeal hearing on February 13. The plan was to build a house in the grounds of 1 Hazel Stub, a semi-detached grade 2 listed building. The site lies outside the Housing Settlement Boundary for Haverhill.
The inspector, Katie Peerless, said the historic core of the listed building had now been largely hidden by later extensions, and dividing the plot next to it would not be sufficient reason in itself to dismiss the appeal.
However, she did not consider the garden as an undeveloped infill site.
"I consider that a new dwelling in this location would introduce a more intense concentration of development that would suburbanise the setting and prove detrimental to the character and appearance of the rural area," she said
