Phil and Bill turn on style
Thursday, 6th September 2001.
MAGNIFICENT Haverhill kept up their superb form until the very end.
Scoring runs was never a problem for the runaway champions of Division Four although Scott Webb failed to break the division’s battling record of 620 runs in a season.
He was out for two games against Wivenhoe II, falling 26 runs short, but Haverhill were well served by Bill Moran with 86 – taking him to 450 runs for the campaign – and Phil Jones, who made 39 in their total of 219.
On a poor wicket where everything kept low, Wivenhoe were never comfortable against the champion’s attack and were 100 for 8 off 25 overs.
That they reached 182 was down to skipper Steve Jones’ decision to give everyone a bowl.
“It rounded off a really good season,” said Jones. “It was the club’s first senior title in their 115-year-history, and we’re really looking forward to next year.”
