Peanut move is backed
Friday, 15th November 2002.
PEANUT producer Percy Dalton is considering moving to Haverhill and town council planners have agreed to encourage the firm to do so.
The company, which roasts peanuts, employs around 200 people at a site in Bow, east London, but has outgrown it and is looking for a new location.
It has submitted a planning application for the former Britvic site in Bury St Edmunds, but this was refused by St Edmundsbury planners.
They wanted stringent odour control measures, but the company said it had never had complaints about smells from its existing factory, which is in a residential area.
Michael Dalton, chairman and managing director of the company founded by his father in 1941, said Haverhill was one of eight sites the company was considering. He planned to move within two years.
Members of Haverhill Town Council's Planning committee heard that the company was considering a site on the Haverhill Business Park.
