Path Closed Due To Sewage Leak

Saturday, 24th May 2003.

A FOOTPATH in Haverhill has been closed while Anglia Water digs up a section of the sewer to investigate why a manhole cover keeps overflowing and pumping raw sewage onto the path next to a school.

Work started three days after Anglian Water collection manager Hugh Crerand met town councillor Alan Smith, MP Richard Spring and local residents at the footpath in Ann Suckling Lane, where sewage overflows have occurred several times over the past few years.

Coun Smith welcomed work starting to finally overcome the problem and said although the closure of the footpath would cause inconvenience, it was necessary for safety reasons and would also allow work to be carried out quickly.

He expected work to last around two weeks and workmen had to dig up the sewer so that a CCTV survey could take place to see if there was a structural problem.

"There have been some complaints about the noise, but what is more important, some disturbance for a couple of weeks or finally getting something done to solve the problem?" he said. "They could not get the cameras down there without digging it up and they may well have to reconstruct the whole sewer."

Mr Crerand said: "Once this part of the work is complete we will then endeavour to identify any properties which may have surface water connected into the foul sewer."
