Partnership seeks volunteers for new befriending service
Thursday, 19th September 2013.
A befriending service in West Suffolk is calling for volunteers to help reduce loneliness and isolation amongst the elderly.
Age UK Suffolk and The Voluntary Network, have created a unique partnership to support older people who may be feeling lonely and isolated.
They are looking for volunteers to visit people in their homes on an ongoing basis for one hour per week, offering companionship, support, and a friendly face to talk to.
Full training will be provided to all volunteers. This simple intervention provides a valuable lifeline to people who otherwise can go days without seeing or speaking to anyone.
Terri Hardy, befriending co-ordinator, said: “Our service provides a lifeline to many vulnerable people in our community; it can make a massive difference to people and can greatly improve their sense of wellbeing.
"It is their link to the outside world and something that people really look forward to. By joining forces with Age UK Suffolk we can also directly link older people into additional support, information and advice if needed to help them to maintain their independence.
"We are keen to recruit new volunteers to help us to provide this valuable service."
