Parking rage 'frightens' leisure centre staff
Thursday, 24th June 2010.
Staff at Haverhill Leisure Centre have been subjected to aggressive and threatening behaviour from motorists who park ineligibly in disabled spaces outside the centre.
Haverhill Town Council was told by Cllr Margaret Marks that the spaces were regularly filled by drivers who had no right to park there, and disabled people could not use them.
"When leoisure centre staff have been out to ask car drivers to move they have been met with aggressive and possibly violent behaviour to the degree that they are now quite frightened," Cllr Marks said.
She asked Haverhill police chief, Insp Chris Galley, who was present at the meeting, to look into ways of dealing with the problem.
Town clerk Gordon Mussett said the land was not part of the highway so the police had no jurisdiction over parking there.
It was the responsibility of St Edmundsbury Borough Council, who owned the land, he said.
But Insp Galley said he thought the police might have a role in liaising with Leisure Centre staff to reassure them with regard to their safety and get them to contact police if they needed to.
