Paralympian explains his sport to business people

Thursday, 19th July 2012.

A large group of Haverhill business people took time out from their day today to hear about the sport of one of the town's Paralympian medallists.

Daniel Bentley, whose mum, Sandra Imrie, lives in Haverhill, and who trains every day at Haverhill Leisure Centre, won gold at the Beijing Paralympics in 2008 as a member of the Great Britain boccia team, and he has been selected again for London 2012.

Boccia, which is similar to bowls, has been a paralympic sport since 1984 and is for athletes with severe disabilities such as cerebral palsy and muscular dystrophy.

Daniel overcame his speech difficulties to give an entertaining talk about how the team won gold in Beijing, and to explain the sport to those attending thebestofhaverhill's monthly meeting at Day's Inn this morning.

He also gave members of his audience the chance to have a go at the game, with some proving to be better than others at it.

He will be taking part in the boccia events at the London Games early in September, where the team hope to defend their gold medal.
