Over 100 blades given up in Haverhill in first month of knife amnesty

Friday, 4th March 2011.

Over 100 knives and sharp objects have been placed in a bin at Haverhill police station as part of Suffolk's knife amnesty in the first month it has been there.

Suffolk police and Sackers Recycling are joining forces to dispose of the knives and other sharp objects that have been deposited in Suffolk’s knife amnesty bins as part of the Bin A Blade campaign.

Since December, anyone who has a knife or blade they wish to dispose of safely has been able to deposit it anonymously in one of the secure bins situated outside Ipswich, Bury St Edmunds and Lowestoft Police Stations.

Mobile bins are also touring the county, and are currently in place at Leiston and Haverhill Police Stations between 9am and 5pm daily, where they will be staying until the end of this month.

The bins are being emptied each month, and the latest count took place on Friday, February 25. The total number of items deposited during the amnesty now stands at 1,804, including 116 knives or sharp objects at Haverhill and 75 at Leiston.

Every month the deposited knives will be taken to Sackers Recycling in Great Blakenham where they will be stored securely. At the end of the amnesty Sackers will tip them all into their metal shredder to be safely disposed of.

Suffolk Constabulary is grateful to Sackers Recycling for supporting the Bin a Blade amnesty and storing and shredding the knives without charge.

Chief Constable Simon Ash said: “It is very pleasing to have so many knives taken out of circulation in the county so far. By returning the knives to their raw materials and recycling them, they could be used for something more productive in the future.

“People living and working in Haverhill and Leiston have taken their opportunity to support the amnesty and make it unacceptable to carry a knife, and items can still be deposited in the bins at these stations during March.

"Next month the mobile bins will move onto Woodbridge and Stowmarket Police Stations to allow those communities to bin their blades.”

A number of other initiatives are planned to run alongside the knife amnesty this year, including knife crime patrols and a community TV commercial raising awareness of the possible outcomes of carrying a knife.
