Outing for new taser officers, but call was exaggerated
Monday, 21st October 2013.
Police with tasers were deployed in Haverhill High Street late on Friday night to deal with what had been reportedas a stabbing, but turned out to be an assault.
A 21-year-old woman from Haverhill was arrested at the scene after a 24-year-old man from Clare suffered a cut forehead after being hit with a bottle.
Haverhill's police chief, Insp Peter Ferrie, said it appeared the victim exaggerated the incident in his initial call, but they wanted to hear from any witnesses to establish exactly what did happen.
The incident occurred on the benches outside the post office at around 11.50pm. Antone who saw anything should contact Haverhill police on 101, or anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
Insp Ferrie confirmed taser officers were now being trained in Haverhill, so that they could be deployed at any time, without waiting for an armed response vehicle from Bury St Edmunds.
Until now only a few officers who happened to be in Haverhill at the time and happened to have been taser trained could be despatched to an incident immediately in this way.
But Insp Ferrie said he expected they would hardly ever be needed. Haverhill officers had been keen to be trained and it did give police here a greater flexibility to deal with incidents.
