One Haverhill is up and running
Thursday, 20th January 2011.
Moves to bring together groups of people who work for the benefit of Haverhill into one organisation took a step forward this morning with agreement to form One Haverhill.
The Haverhill Partnership agreed to change the way it works, with its last decision as a forum being to call its successor organisation One Haverhill.
The partnership was formed a decade ago with the aim of bringing together as wide a range of organisations as possible to pull together for the town.
After a time it became very large and unwieldy, so a smaller executive group was formed to take issues forward.
But a recent survey of its working identified long periods of inactivity between meetings, and the group had little real power to change things.
The new organisation will be made up of nine councillors (three each from the town, borough and county councils) and ten or 11 others, to ensure there is not a local authority majority.
These would include representatives from the voluntary sector, chamber of commerce, safer neighbourhood team, head teachers group, Havebury Housing, local GPs and Abbeycroft Leisure.
The new group will be chaired to begin with by the chairman of the partnership, Cllr Anne Gower, although she told members she did not want to remain chairman beyond the transition stage of six to 12 months.
Among its stated functions would be championing Haverhill and influencing decisions and allocation of resources from other organisations.
The first meeting of One Haverhill is expected to be in March.
