ONE Haverhill brings old people's support groups together

Tuesday, 17th June 2014.

ONE Haverhill says it has has achieved its aim of bringing together organisations working to help and support older people in the town, with the merger of Haverhill's Old People’s Forum and Age UK Suffolk’s Haverhill Older People’s Action Group.

In 2011, ONE Haverhill took responsibility for the town’s Older People’s Forum when its chairman retired.

At this time, there were several different groups in the town working on projects for older people that were duplicating effort.

One of ONE Haverhill’s aims was to bring these groups together around a table and discuss how duplication could be avoided to help organisations further achieve their aims and help older people.

Having set up regular meetings with local organisations working to help and support older people, the project has now taken one step further to eradicate duplication with the merger of Haverhill Older People’s Forum with Age UK Suffolk’s new Haverhill Older People’s Action Group.

Haverhill Older People’s Action Group’s key aim will be to facilitate more support and activity for older people in the town.

Sarah Howard, chairman of the ONE Haverhill board said: “ONE Haverhill was set up to provide a way to bring people around the table to ensure organisations in the town talked and worked together to avoid duplication of effort and resource.

“We found many organisations and services that did the same or similar things that could work together to avoid duplication and by doing so enhance their help and support to people in the town.

"This is an example of how this has worked and will lead to the benefit of older people in the town.

"The first meeting of the two merged groups has taken place and there was a lot of enthusiasm to get the group re-invigorated again, making good use of the membership organisations that ONE Haverhill has brought together around the table who may be able to offer resources/expertise to take key projects forward.”
