Olympics volunteering project in Suffolk recognised

Friday, 11th March 2011.

The County Events Team, a project for volunteers in Suffolk who are inspired by the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, has been officially recognised by the organisers of the London 2012 Games.

The County Events Team has been developed to provide those who are keen to get involved in sport and cultural events volunteering with opportunities to assist at local events and to gain events training as part of their volunteering.

The team have been granted the ‘Inspire Mark’ the badge of the London 2012 Inspire Programme, in recognition of it being an innovative and exceptional project stimulated by the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Seb Coe, chair of the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games said: “The County Events Team in Suffolk is helping to provide those who want to volunteer to fulfil their potential and get involved locally.

"I am proud that with the help of partners such as the Suffolk Association of Voluntary Organisations (SAVO) we are delivering on our vision to use the power of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games to boost participation in local volunteering.”

Cllr Kathy Gosling, Suffolk County Council’s portfolio holder for sport, culture, diversity, health and wellbeing, said: “London 2012 provides a fantastic opportunity for volunteers to get involved both locally in Suffolk, and potentially, at the big event itself.

"Through the County Events Team, people across the county can get involved in volunteering at a whole host of sporting and cultural events linked to the Games”.

Sarah Gilson, a member of the County Events Team, said: “The project is a great way to get involved with local events and to be a part of something new. I hope to be a volunteer at this year’s Great East Swim, as well as other events that are coming up”.

Mike McCarthy, Suffolk 2012 volunteering legacy officer said: “Many local people are keen to take up the challenge and volunteer at some of the exciting events that we have in the county.

"Some 140 people have now registered on the website since its launch last autumn. The type of events that are recruiting volunteers through this project include: the Midnight Walk, Cycling for All, Races for Life, the Great East Swim and Theatre in the Forest”.
