Olympic theme for children's summer reading challenge
Wednesday, 1st August 2012.
This year’s Summer Reading Challenge at Suffolk librasries, including Haverhill, is off to a great start, with over 4,000 children signed up already.
Suffolk libraries encourage children to read over the long summer break by signing up for the nationwide Summer Reading Challenge.
This year's Summer Reading Challenge, Story Lab, is a designated activity for the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad. The Olympic challenge to children is to read stories from around the world.
Children can win bronze, silver and gold medal stickers by reading library books including eBooks.
They can take part in the challenge by visiting their local library where staff along with volunteers will sign them up. It's completely free of charge and every child will receive a membership card or pack.
The challenge involves reading six books over the summer to earn a gold medal. After registering, children can also do the challenge online.
Last year was the most successful so far - more than 7,300 children signed up in Suffolk, but with 4,000 children already signed up officials are hoping to smash that target.
Cllr Graham Newman, Suffolk County Council’s cabinet member responsible for education and young people, said: “The summer reading challenge is a great way of encouraging children to keep up with their reading over the summer holiday.
“With such an impressive number of children already signed up, I am hopeful that we will reach, if not exceed last year’s level of participation.
“This year's Olympic-themed reading challenge certainly promises to be fun and exciting so I would urge parents and children to find out more and help us to make this year our best year yet.”
