No one to be charged with Castle Hill school fire
Tuesday, 28th August 2012.
No one is to be charged with causing the fire which destroyed Castle Hill Middle School in May.
Suffolk's county prosecuting solicitor's office have decided not to bring any charges, following interviews with two teenagers arrested by police a couple of weeks after the fire.
The youths, aged 14 and 17, were bailed until August 15 when they were interviewed and a decision made not to prosecute.
Haverhill's senior police officer, Insp Peter Ferrie has said he was disappointed it had not been possible to bring the matter to court, but they were not seeking anyone else in connection with the incident and the case was now closed.
Police had warned of the dangers of schools made redundant under Suffolk County Council's change from three-tier to two-tier education.
Both Chalkstone and Castle Hill middle schools became targeted by vandals and metal thieves and police urged they should be knocked down.
The fire, which was started overnight on the weekend before the Queen's Diamond Jubilee celebrations, completely destroyed the school buildings, which have now been demolished.
Police took the unusual step of arresting the 14-year-old when he was at school because they considered it such a serious incident.
