Nightclub has new owners

By Jo Deeks on Thursday, 11th October 2001.

NEW owners have taken over Haverhill’s Rush Nightclub this week and are looking for the support of the town’s youngsters.

Hannah Solomons and Scott Murray, from Market Harborough in Leicestershire, want to change the town’s attitudes to the club.

Although they have both worked in clubs, this is their first joint venture running one together.

“We could see it had a lot of potential and fell in love with it,” said Hannah. “We know it has had a hard time and has not got a terrific reputation, but we are going to work hard to change it.

“We have got lots of plans. We haven’t got £3 million to re-fit it, but we really want it to succeed.

“We want to improve the atmosphere and the clientele. We just want to change the attitude of the town towards the club.”

She added: “Our main priority is to get I people in the town to stay in the town, then later to attract people from Cambridge and Newmarket as well.

“We are asking people to give us some support, it is your local club and if you don’t use it, it won’t be there next year.”

The new owners will not be making big changes straight away, but are planning special promotions, improved decor, different DJs, children’s nights and lighting in the alleyway between the club and the High Street.

The nightclub was opened by Martin Noble in November, 1999, after a £400,000 re-fit of the former Co-op premises.

It suffered from competition when the nearby Bell pub was granted a licence until lam and Mr Noble sold an8O percent stake to Courtmead plc, which runs H20 clubs at Bishops Stortford and Braintree.

Steve Webb, chief executive at Courtmead, had said earlier this year that they planned to spend £750,000 upgrading the club.

Under the new ownership, some changes will already be noticeable this weekend and the club is also recruiting new staff.
