New Year Walk for Charity
Monday, 6th January 2003.
NEW YEAR revellers at the White Horse pub at Withersfield, near Haverhill, battled through their hangovers to take part in a sponsored walk which raised £1,000 for the oncology department at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge.
An intrepid 20 walkers, including landlord Bernard Lee, left Withersfield at 11am on New Year's Day and completed the seven-mile route to the Three Hills pub at Bartlow by 1pm. Landlord Mark Downer greeted them with a celebration lunch and a jazz band.
"We are constantly amazed by the generosity of our customers and since my chum Mark Downer at the Three Hills has joined in we have raised even more money," said Mr Lee.
"It was amazing, people were stopping on the main road and giving us £10 and £20 notes through their car windows."
Mr Lee received successful cancer treatment at Addenbrooke's shortly after he took over the pub and in the past six years has raised well over £20,000 for the hospital through various events.
