New volunteer helps Ian continue his dream job

Friday, 18th December 2009.

The dream of working with the police can continue for a 26-year-old Haverhill man who has Downs Syndrome, thanks to the support of a new fellow volunteer.

Glynis Mackay joined Suffolk Constabulary as a Police Support Volunteer (PSV) in October, giving up her time to support Ian Cramsie, who has Down’s Syndrome, and has been volunteering at the Haverhill Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) since June. Glynis was put forward for the role by Haverhill Volunteer Centre.

Until recently a worker from the charity, Mencap, has supported Ian. They are no longer able to provide support, which left Ian without
anyone to support him in undertaking his volunteer duties, and Ian’s position in question.

By joining the team, Glynis has enabled Ian to continue in his role and makes a valuable contribution to Haverhill SNT. Ian’s role as a PSV offers him the reality to fulfil his dream of working for the police, and his work is highly valued by all the team.

Ian’s duties include washing police vehicles, completing an inventory of vehicle equipment,
making refreshments and other duties such as sorting out the lost bikes shed and organising leaflets.

Haverhill police chief, Insp Andrew Mason said: “We are extremely grateful to Glynis
for donating her time to our Safer Neighbourhood Team, and allowing Ian to continue his work for the police. By volunteering, she has enabled
Ian to continue his duties for the police force, something that brings him great pleasure and makes a fantastic contribution to our day-to-day
work.

“Ian has been commended for his valuable contribution and would be sorely missed if he could not continue his voluntary work. Glynis is
now an important part of our team, and like all police volunteers, plays a unique role within Suffolk Constabulary. Volunteers add value,
compliment and support the work we do and help us forge closer links with communities.”

Glynis commented “I am looking forward to my continued work with Haverhill SNT. I already knew Ian from previous work and am enjoying
supporting him in this role. He clearly experiences great pleasure from being able to work for the police.

"I hope that the two of us can continue to make a valued contribution to the officers and staff who serve our local community.”

Ian and Glynis work together every Monday afternoon at Haverhill Police Station.
