New pub pours memories and good times for care home residents
Tuesday, 15th December 2015.
Residents at Cleves Place care home in Haverhill are toasting to their home’s newest feature; a traditional country pub. The pub was installed at the residents’ request and has been named the ‘Dog and Parrot’ after the home’s two pets.
The ‘Dog and Parrot’ pub is situated at the back of the home’s cinema room and features a fully functioning bar, which was donated to the home by the local Growler Brewery, and pint glasses which have been donated by a local Wetherspoons. The familiar setting with traditional décor has many benefits, especially for those living with dementia, as it sparks memories of times spent enjoying a pint at the local pub. It’s also a place where residents can enjoy their favourite tipple whilst socialising with friends and relatives.
Sharlene Van Tonder, home manager at Cleves Place, said: “We would all like to thank Growler Brewery and Wetherspoons for their kind donations. I’m pleased the pub idea was chosen by the residents, for the residents. We believe it’s really important for older people to keep active and involved in everyday activities and to continue enjoying the things they love, which is why the pub is an excellent addition to Cleves Place.”
Cleves Place, on Millfields Way in Haverhill, recently won an award for ‘Great dementia care’ at Care UK’s Residential Care Services Stars awards ceremony.
