New priority will target youths near Clements shops
Monday, 14th February 2011.
Young people congregating near the shops on the Clements estate in Haverhill is the latest issue to be tackled by the town's police-led Safer Neighbourhood Team.
The SNT sets regular priorities and has just added anti-social behaviour in the Leiston Road and Harewood Terrace areas to its list.
The list, which has a maximum of three, had fallen to one at the last public meeting of the SNT in December - anti-social behaviour in the Strasbourg Square shops area of the Chalkstone estate.
SNT leader Insp Chris Galley said the problem centred around groups of youths congregating and intimidating residents in the late afternoon and early evening. In general it was not alcohol-related, he said.
He said extra patrols would be made in the area, and the SNT would be working with other agencies and partners in the multi-agency anti-social behaviour team for the west of Suffolk.
This includes council officers, police, environmental health officers and Havebury Housing. They were already working with Havebury on improving the environment in the area, he said.
Last weeklend was National Special Constabulary Weekend and saw special constables from the Haverhill team talking to peopel in the area on Saturday.
The SNT runs a 'street-a-week' operation and one was carried out in the vicinity at the weekend so police could get more information from occupants about their concerns.
