New life for fire-damaged former carpet shop
Wednesday, 12th October 2011.
A fire-damaged building in Haverhill High Street which has lain derelict for several years is likely to get a new lease of life soon.
Haverhill Town Councilplanning committee last night raised no objections to plans from Havebury Housing Partnership to demolish 83 High Street, the former Bowes and Bowes carpet shop.
They also supported the housing provider's plan to replace it with a ground floor office and seven flats, with parking below ground level.
Members saw plans showing an access from Duddery Road to the site which stretches back some distance behind the high street.
Cllr Roger Andre said he was pleased to see Havebury were preserving the line of shops by having an office on the ground floor.
Cllr David Russo said: "I think everyone in Haverhill is desperate for something to be done with that building. Anything would be better than what we have at the moment."
