New initiative to help residents feel safer
Wednesday, 14th July 2010.
If you live in one of eight selected streets in Haverhill, you might find a police officer knocking on your door sometime over the summer holidays.
The officer will be wanting to know if you are aware of any anti-social behaviour, disorder or crime in your street and if you have seen anything suspicious there recently.
A new initiative, called Street A Week, is being launched by police on July 26.
Each week they will concentrate on a particular street and attempt to make contact with all its residents.
They will make two attempts by personal calls, one in the morning and one in the evening, in an effort to find someone at home.
Any homes where they are unsuccessful they will deliver a questionnaire, which they will call back for personally to collect.
Other agencies including local councillors will also be involved.
PC Will Wright of Haverhill Safer Neighbourhood Team said the data collected would be acted upon.
"We'll be asking people if they have witnessed or experienced anti-social behaviour of any kind recently," he said. "It's all about improving public confidence."
The steets have been selected based on analysis of calls and information received by police.
The eight streets will be covered in a six-week initiative - two weeks will see two smaller or adjacent streets combined - and the aim is to cover some 150 homes.
