New Havebury offices will rise from carpet shop ashes
Tuesday, 17th April 2012.
The demolition of a derelict carpet shop in Haverhill town centre has marked the start of works to build new premises for Havebury as well as seven new flats for tenants.
The affordable homes provider has been operating from an office in the town’s Manor Road for the last seven years, but the decision was made last year to find premises which were more accessible to the public.
As a result, the not-for-profit partnership purchased the former Bowes and Bowes carpet shop, which had been sitting empty on the High Street for a number of years, following a major fire.
The shop has now been demolished, with works started by Cocksedge Building Contractors to create a new office as well as seven new flats over three storeys. The development is worth an estimated £1.2 million.
Havebury chief executive Karen Mayhew said: “We have always been committed to having a base in Haverhill in order to offer a personal, local service to tenants in the town.
"It was felt that the Manor Road building no longer met our business needs and so we selected a more convenient High Street site.
“Our former office has since been purchased by Essential Nail Products Ltd. We have reached an agreement with them to remain on site until our new premises are ready by the end of the year.”
She added that Havebury tenants will still be able to access local advice on rents, repairs, supported housing, neighbourhood and community enquiries at the Manor Road offices throughout the week.
“We understand how important it is for our tenants to be able to speak to someone face to face about issues they are experiencing,” she said.
“We are glad that we can continue this service during the building works at the High Street premises at the same time as building an excellent ‘shop front’ base and new town centre homes.”
