New church and community centre planned
Wednesday, 6th February 2013.
A proposal to build a church and community centre with a 350-seat auditorium in Chapelwent Road in Haverhill has been welcomed by town councillors.
The River Of Life church has submitted plans for the development on a piece of open ground next to the square in Chapelwent Road, between the Arrendene and Meadowlands estates.
Members of Haverhill Town Council planning committee welcomed the proposal, which is on land earmarked for community facilities and comes from an organisation which has done a lot of work to help disadvantaged people in the town.
The church has been meeting at various premises across the town over the last decade, but has grown until there were few big enough to accommodate it.
The plan envisages conferences being held in the facility, as well as services and regular community activities.
Members'only concern was that not enough parking was included. The proposal allows for 73 parking spaces which they felt was inadequate for up to 350 people and would result on roadside parking causing danger to children and inconvenience to neighbours.
Complete soundproofing of the auditorium is included within the plans.
Cllr Phillip French said the group had achieved miracles in helping people in the town who had fallen on hard times, through its driving of the REACH project including the food and furniture banks.
