New bus shelters on the way (with a bit of luck)

Thursday, 26th August 2010.

Bus users in Haverhill have their fingers crossed the the new shelters at the town's bus station may be in place by the autumn, thanks to an agreement by Suffolk County Council.

The shelters, promised to replace the impractical current ones which caused so much controversy when they were installed last year, have been in the pipeline for months.

After the council finally gave in to protests from local people and agreed to a replacement scheme, which they said would be in place by April, there were further delays because of problems with the suppliers.

Then the new Government withdrew some of this year's funding to councils for transport projects, and all schemes had to be considered again as to whether they could still go ahead.

Last week senior councillors agreed the Haverhill bus shelter replacement scheme should be retained.

Haverhill county councillor Anne Gower said she was delighted with the decision which she and others had been fighting for.

"We have been lobbying strenuously for the council to do what they should have done in the first place, which is provide us with proper bus shelters," she said.

"Now it does seem they have agreed the shelters will be in place before the bad weather sets in. I shall be monitoring what happens very closely. I am not having any more delays on this - it is just ridiculous.

"The public got behind this campaign and lobbied and petitioned and everything, and that has been inordinately helpful to us as councillors because it shows we are representing a lot of people and not just one or two residents."
