New bus company takes delivery of new buses
Thursday, 16th June 2011.
Two weeks after stepping in to save jobs and services following the collapse of Haverhill based Burton’s Coaches (Yellow Star Travel), Stephensons Buses has taken delivery of two brand new buses, an investment of around £220,000.
The new ADL Enviro 200 single deck buses were officially launched today by Bill Hiron, managing director of Stephensons of Essex, and Stephen Harvey, contract and information manager at Suffolk County Council.
Mr Hiron said: “We stepped in at very short notice to rescue Burton’s bus services, and have sourced vehicles from a variety of sources to keep the show on the road.
"However, we are grateful for the continuing support of our customers and other stakeholders, and are delighted to be able to demonstrate our long-term commitment to local services so quickly.
"These state-of-the-art, British-built buses meet the latest EU emissions requirements, and the highest standards of passenger comfort."
The new buses will be used primarily on Stephensons’ Bury St Edmunds–Mildenhall route.
Cllr Guy McGregor, portfolio holder for roads, transport and planning for Suffolk County Council, said: “We have worked hard with Stephensons to ensure continuity of services for Suffolk residents, and we are delighted that they have invested so quickly, in brand new buses for the area.
"Bus travel is good for the environment, and eases congestion on our roads, and I welcome the investment into Suffolk’s public transport services.”
Stephensons took over Burtons, which went into administration a fortnight ago after some 60 years of operation in Haverhill, and now runs its services in the area from the former Burtons depot in Duddery Hill.
