New beat officer will be a big presence in town centre

Monday, 4th November 2013.

Haverhill is to have a new town centre beat officer, described by the town's police chief as 'a big presence'.

PC Mark Ellis, who served for several years as town centre beat officer in Bury St Edmunds, takes over this week fromPC Simon Bourne, who has been moved to Sudbury.

PC Ellis, who has been on the response team at Haverhill for the past two years, moves to the SNT with the clear brief of sorting out town centre issues.

Insp Peter Ferrie said he wanted PC Ellis to be a big presence in the town, literally as well as metaphorically (he is 6ft 4in).

"I want himto get to know and work with all the shopkeepers," he said, "and I want everyone to get to know him.

"He is an old-style beat officer and I hope he can help deal with the parking issue as he will be walking up and down the High Street much of the time.

"He will be the first point of call on all town centre issues."

Sgt Gary Miller has taken over today from Sgt Sarah Bartley as the SNT sergeant in Haverhill, and a new temporary sergeant on the response team arrives from Bury St Edmunds soon, Sgt Claire Burgess.
