Nature reserve in receives helping hand

Thursday, 18th November 2004.

A nature reserve situated around a dismantled railway line that runs through Haverhill is set to receive a helping hand, thanks to an enthusiastic group of volunteers.

The volunteers from Genzyme will be digging out their wellies this Sunday.

They will get stuck into a range of nature conservation activities at the Haverhill Railway Walk Nature Reserve. This includes taking out many of the small and self-seeding trees, in order to encourage the growth of grassland and give wildflowers the chance to flourish next year.

The work builds on the achievements already by the Haverhill Railway Walk volunteer group, made up of local residents of all age groups and abilities.

By giving just a few hours of their spare time, both volunteer groups are helping to improve the area which is a haven for wildlife such as lizards and slow-worms.

It is hoped that local primary schools will benefit from the Millfields Way area of the reserve by using it as an educational resource.

Cllr Terry Clements, Cabinet member for Sport and Leisure said:“It’s great to see the volunteers from Genzyme helping to develop this site, not only as a place of beauty but for all members of the community to enjoy and appreciate.”

Simon Cousins, Vice President and General Manager of Genzyme Haverhill Operations said: “We are really pleased to contribute towards improving such an important wildlife area in Haverhill.

If you’d like to become involved in your own green space and get some fresh air and exercise at the same time, why not come along to the other Haverhill Railway Walk volunteer session on Wednesday’s from 10am until 1pm? Or there is the East Town Park Conversation volunteers group that meets every Monday from 9.30am until 3.30pm. Both meet at the Countryside Centre, East Town Park, Haverhill. You don’t need to have any previous experience and training is provided. However an average level of fitness is beneficial in order to fully take part in all the tasks.

Please contact the Park Rangers on 01440 710745 or the Community Parks Officer on 01284 757063 for more information.
