National Adoption Week 19 – 25 of October 2015 - ‘Too old at 4?’
Monday, 19th October 2015.
National Adoption Week 2015 is 19 to 25 October and the theme this year is ‘Too old at 4?’
New statistics published today to mark National Adoption Week reveal that the average age of children waiting to be placed in adoptive families is just four years old.
The figures from the national adoption information service, First4Adoption show potential adopters often prefer to parent a baby rather than an older child. What’s surprising is that these so-called ‘older’ children are as young as four. The focus of this year’s National Adoption Week is to find homes for these children – many of whom are in sibling groups or who have complex needs.
Suffolk County Council’s Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, Cllr Gordon Jones said: “We recognise the needs of older children in particular who are just waiting for loving families to look after them. National Adoption Week reminds us all of the need to provide our most vulnerable children with security in their lives.
“We know that fostering or adoption can change a child's life for good and we need more people to consider whether they could adopt or foster a child in care."
Suffolk County Council will be supporting National Adoption Week by holding drop-in community events around the county. The events will help those who would like to find out more about adopting an older child and give them an opportunity to talk to Adopters and dedicated team members.
Monday 19 October - Felixstowe Library Crescent Rd, Felixstowe, Suffolk IP11 7BY – 12pm - 2pm.
Wednesday 21 October - Lowestoft Library Clapham Road South Lowestoft, Suffolk NR32 1DR – 12pm - 2pm and 5pm - 7pm
Thursday 22 October - Seckford Golf Club, Seckford Hall Rd, Great Bealings, Woodbridge, Suffolk IP13 6NT - 5.30pm - 7.30pm
Friday 23 October - Haverhill, Burton Centre Community Room Camps Road, Haverhill, Suffolk CB9 8HB – 12pm - 2pm
Suffolk currently has five children aged four years and over waiting to be adopted. With two of the five children in a sibling group.
