Musician aims to revive Haverhill folk scene
Thursday, 25th April 2013.
A local musician who was instrumental in the Haverhill Folk Group in the 1980s is looking to re-establish a folk scene in Haverhill.
Len Marsh is working with Haverhill Arts Centre to start up regular folk sessions in the Arts Centre bar in a project to re-introduce regular sessions in the town.
Len said: "Back in the 1980s, Don Mackay and I ran the Haverhill Folk Club at The Rose and Crown.
"We had a large number of musicians and singers in Haverhill and we promoted numerous folk events there until it was sold and refurbished.
"With Haverhill Arts Centre having a successful programme of folk music in place, now seems like a great time to get a regular session going.
"I know a number of local players who travel to folk evenings at venues out of town and hope that they will support this new venture."
Len, a bodhran player who also plays guitar and ukulele, is a member of The Cabin Band, who specialise in French dance music.
Nick Keeble, for Haverhill Arts Centre, said: “It is good to be working with Len on this. We hope that by establishing a core group of ‘folkies’ we can enhance the existing programme of music that we offer."
The first session will be held in the Arts Centre bar on Wednesday, May 8, between 8pm and 11pm. It is open to musicians, singers and anyone interested in listening to folk music.
