MP visits college's conservation training programme

Thursday, 18th November 2010.

Haverhill's MP Matthew Hancock met young people from West Suffolk College last week, who have benefited from a life skills and conservation training programme with environmental education charity, the Green Light Trust.

West Suffolk College’s ‘Synergy Group’, which includes Haverhill students, has completed a training programme designed to re-motivate them in their learning and re-connect them with nature.

The programme offers many activities including hedgerow and hazel coppicing, building benches and building bird boxes using special hand tools.

Mr Hancock met the students and discussed their experiences and they gave him a Powerpoint presentation as well.

He also launched the Green Light Trust’s appeal to secure additional funding to work with up to 3,000 young people from Suffolk and neighbouring counties.

The project appeal is called ‘Creating Greener Young Lives’ and is the charity’s major contribution to Suffolk’s ‘Creating the Greenest County’ initiative over the next three years. The charity has been informed it has won a £10,000 grant from the initiative.

Matthew said: “Around the world, we need to act to tackle the risks posed by climate change, and here in Suffolk we can take a lead.

"The widely-shared goal of making Suffolk the greenest county will help improve our quality of life, and also help contribute to tackling this global problem.

"The Green Light Trust is a shining example of the community-based actions we need. I commend it wholeheartedly and wish it every success.

"I had a fascinating time meeting the West Suffolk College students on Friday and think this is a programme students in Haverhill can benefit greatly from. I was really impressed by their enthusiasm and they had clearly learnt a lot from the programme.”
