MP highlights Haverhill's high petrol prices in Parliament

Thursday, 17th November 2011.

Haverhill's MP Matthew Hancock raised the issue of high petrol prices in the town during a Parliamentary debate yesterday.

Mr Hancock intervened in a House of Commons debate on petrol prices to call for lower petrol prices for Haverhill. It was also announced yesterday that Sainsbury’s were cutting the cost of their fuel by 2p a litre across the country.

Harlow Conservative MP moved the debate which called on the Government to "consider the effect that increased taxes on fuel will have on the economy, examine ways of working with industry to ensure that falls in oil prices are passed on to consumers, to take account of market competitiveness, and to consider the feasibility of a price stabilisation mechanism that would work alongside the fair fuel stabiliser to address fluctuations in the pump price."

Rurtal MPs of all parties from all over the country spoke in support of the motion, and Mr Hancock intervened to say: "Is it not the case that there are unfair differences in the local price of fuel as well as the national price? In Haverhill, in my constituency, fuel is up to 10p more expensive than in nearby Bury. Is not that sort of thing patently unfair?"

The issue has been raised at many meetings he has had with constituents, and recently at the annual Haverhill business ratepayers' meeting Mr Hancock pledhed to do all he could to address it.

After the debate, Mr Hancock said: “I welcome the announcement that Sainsbury’s is cutting the cost of fuel by 2p across the country. But there is more to do.

"The people of Haverhill suffer higher costs than nearly all surrounding towns. This is patently unfair on the people of Haverhill. Why should Haverhill drivers have to pay more?”
