MP gets another Government minister to visit to Haverhill
Tuesday, 29th November 2011.
The Minister at the Department of Work and Pensions has agreed to visit Haverhill Jobcentre to pay tribute to the work done by the team who run it.
Haverhill's MP Matthew Hancock used the opportunity of a question at yesterday’s work and pensions questions in the House of Commons to highlight the 'fantastic' work of the Haverhill Jobcentre Plus which he said, had set up an innovative work experience scheme that had seen youth unemployment fall by over 18 per cent.
Chris Grayling, Minister at the Department of Work and Pensions, had been praising work experience schemes in general and Mr Hancock used the opportunity to ask: “Will the minister visit one such successful work experience programme in Haverhill in my constituency, where youth unemployment has fallen by 15 per cent since the programme started?
"Some 40 per cent of young unemployed people are on the programme and, as with the national average, half of them are going into full-time jobs, even where there were no vacancies.
The minister replied with a glowing tribute to the team at Jobcentre Plus, and agreed to visit the scheme when he could.
“I pay tribute to the staff of Jobcentre Plus in my honourable friend’s constituency for their part in delivering a successful scheme," he said. "I will be delighted, the next time I am in Suffolk, to drop in with him to meet and pay tribute to them for what they have done."
After his question, Mr Hancock said: “I am delighted that the minister agreed to visit the Jobcentre Plus team in Haverhill.
"The scheme is fantastic. It is an inspiring example of how different sectors can work together with flexibility and innovation to achieve outstanding results.”
Recently Mr Hancock persuaded education secretary Michael Gove to visit Haverhill to see the high-quality work being done in the town's two senior schools.
