Monty spirit leads to an eight-try rout

By Jim Morgan at Coronation Sports Ground, Felixstowe on Wednesday, 31st October 2012.

EASTERN COUNTIES RUGBY LEAGUE DIVISION TWO: Felixstowe 5 Haverhill 53. Match report.

New signing Monty Beaton scored his first club try on debut and set up two further tries in an exciting display of flowing rugby from Haverhill.

An 80-metre kick from Kieran Ewens on 30 seconds saw three Haverhill players pressure the Felixstowe full back. The poor clearance was gathered by George Foley, who gained valuable yards before releasing Mickey Lansdowne for 0-5.

With the difficult Ewens kick soaring over the bar for 0-7, Haverhill were settled inside 90 seconds.

Felixstowe managed to gain a penalty on 30 metres, but the kick was short and it was Ewens' boot on 20 minutes that made the score 0-10.

On 26 minutes a Lansdowne charge-down of a 22m drop-out nearly led to his second try, but it set up a five-metre scrum and quick hands between the impressive number eight Kieran McDonagh and Gavin Hope leading to McDonagh crashing over for 0-15, the Ewens conversion just short.

Skipper Hunt scored an amazing try from a Lansdowne release, as Ewens limped off on 32 minutes, for 0-20 and then, with two minutes left on the clock, Haverhill’s only bad play took place.

A penalty inside the 22 was tapped and knocked on, where this should have been punted down the park for distance. The resultant scrum led to pressure and Felixstowe crossed the line for 5-20 and the half-time whistle.

The second half led to some of the nicest rugby to be seen on any field of play. Flowing moves involving the whole team ensued, Hope releasing Beaton for an under-posts try on 55 minutes for Hunt to slot the conversion for 5-27.

Then on 60 minutes a 60-metre run by Beaton and the perfect pass to Hunt saw the next converted try for 5-34.

Another huge breakout on 65 minutes saw Derren Carew making the hard yards and the quick-thinking Woods taking the quick tap and score for 5-39, with Lansdowne releasing Gian-Paulo Nash for 5-44 on 75 minutes and Hunt converting for 5-46 and then, on the final whistle, Bishop released Woods for his second try and the Hunt conversion made the final score 5-53.

Class oozed from Haverhill this week. Let’s hope they carry this forward.

It's a huge game next week at home to Norwich Union, 2pm kick-off. With new sponsors and kit on the day, this is one not to be missed.
