Mixed tennis team gets back to winning ways
Monday, 5th July 2010.
In the Halstead and District Tennis League Haverhill Tennis Club mixed team had an excellent start to the season winning their first four matches, but narrowly lost the next to Lavenham B 5-4 with the team of Kris Leach & Marcia Armstrong, Joan Ford & Billy Hudson and Gill Argent & Ross Tobin.
A heavier defeat followed against Essex B 8-1. The team was Adam Fowle & Gill Argent, Marcia Armstrong & Jake Warner and Josh Dashwood & Lucy Hardwick.
Haverhill got back to winning ways against Braintree where they won 7-2. The team here was Marcia Armstrong & Ross Tobin (won 2) Abi Cartwright-Thomas & Josh Dashwood(won 3) and Lucy Hardwick & Nigel Fitch(won 2). There were some close sets with three going to tie breaks.
In the Norfolk & Suffolk Tennis League Division Three Haverhill men's B team entertained top-of-the-table Thetford and had a creditable draw at 4-4.
The strong pairing of Adam Fowle & Peter Cannon were successful in winning 7-5, 7-5 against Thetford's first pair and 7-5, 6-3 v the second pair. Fowle had excellent service games throughout and was ably backed up by Cannon with controlled ground strokes.
Sadly, Haverhill's second pairing of Ray Goddard & Steve Withers could not win any sets, going down 0-6, 4-6 v the first pair and 2-6, 4-6 v the second pair, although they were closer than the scores suggest as both the matches finished at a late 10.15pm.
