Mixed results for town's golfers

On Wednesday and Saturday, September 15 and 18 the Ladies Fraser Plate was competed for at Haverhill Golf Club.
Mary Sail won the overall competition with a creditable score of 34pts, in second place was Lyn Fish with 30pts and in third place Theresa Spittle with 30pts.
Haverhill had mixed results in their recent friendly matches, starting with the ladies who were hosts to Heydon Grange on Thursday, September 16. Sadly, after a closely-fought match, they lost 2½-1½.
The mixed match against Cambridge Menzies on Saturday, September 18, resulted in a 5-2 victory, with the home advantage paying off on this occasion.
The seniors played in five matches during the last fortnight, the first away to Stoke by Nayland, on September 15, where they lost 6-2. However, they bounced back for their home match against Bury St Edmunds on Friday, September 17, with a 7½-½ win.
On Monday, September 20, they were away to Thetford and lost 5-3 and then next day they had another away fixture at Colne Valley, where they lost 2-6. Finally on Thursday, September 23, they played at home against Fynn Valley, where they won 6-2.
The September IFF Challenge was played on Wednesday, September 22. The overall winner, with a fabulous nett 65, was Dave Cohen and as a result his handicap has been reduced by two shots to 11.
The full results were: Division One, 1 Andy Gelder 79-11-68; 2 Paul Gardiner 77-8-69 (lowest gross); 3 Michael Warren 79-7-72.
Division Two, 1 Dave Cohen 78-13-65; 2 Stewart King 81-13-68; 3 Roger Wheatley 89-19-70.
Division Three, 1 Ian Raper 93-24-69, 2 Brian Johnson 94-22-72, 3 Roger Hartley 97-24-73.
Haverhill’s end of season Junior Skills Challenge was held on Tuesday, August 31, which was attended by 19 juniors.
Head professional Paul Wilby said: "After the success of the earlier challenge in June, it was great to see another good turnout. The rate of progression of our juniors at the golf club has been phenomenal, and they have enjoyed a very successful summer."
The challenge was based on short game, mid game and long game skills, with accuracy and consistency being the most important factors.
The results were: Division One (0-12 handicap), 1 Liam Merritt, 2 Richard Boyles. Division Two (13-28) 1 James Higham, 2 Ellis Brown. Division Three (29+) 1 Edward Halpin, 2 Joel Walter-Smith.
