Measures stepped up to protect cemetery from vandals
Thursday, 8th July 2010.
Vandals have again attacked Haverhill cemetery, despite police stepping up their patrols in the wake of an incident iver the weekend before last.
Sgt Sarah Bartley told Haverhill Safer Neighbourhood Team meeting today that more damage had taken place on Saturday.
The cemetery is owned by St Edmundsbury Borough Council, and Damien Parker from the council's parks department, said the fence down the side had been effective at keeping intruders out.
Plans for a similar fence along the frontage on Withersfield Road had been abandoned because of objections on aesthetic grounds, so now the council was aiming to replace fencing above the Victorian brickwork.
"It was felt the original plan would have turned the cemetery into something that looked like a prison camp," he said.
"We think we can do something that looks better and it should be in place in four or five weeks.
"The alternative is to close the back gate altogether, but it would get a lot of objection from people who use it regularly."
Chairman, Cllr Tim Marks, said the new measures needed to be 'unclimable' and the current front gates were climable.
